This is the Immanuel principle, in which the term ‘Immanuel’ literally means, ‘God is with us.’ The presence of the sovereign God with his people should, in fact, drown out Israel’s debilitating fear and embolden them to act. Again, Yahweh is constant, giving and trustworthy; therefore, the people should not be afraid. How are Joshua and Israel to react to the command of God that they cross into the land of promise?
